Growing up in a musical family, he started studying violin with Russian violinist Bachyev at the age of four and learning Yueqin at the age of six with his father, the legendary Yueqin master Shaoxian Feng. In 1978, he was admitted to the China National Traditional Orchestra and since then, he has held the positions of principal Ruan performer and recitalist. He visited nearly 30 countries on behalf on the Orchestra, including the United States, Switzerland, Russia, and Austria. Feng was also invited to stage on numerous famous venues and music festivals such as John F. In 1987, Feng formed China’s first-ever rock band, WHITE ANGEL, as its guitarist. In 1985 he released his first guitar album “Farewell 1981”. In 2006 he developed Fretless Ruan and its performing techniques. After 47 failures in 17 years, he successfully reproduced the original sound of Tang Ruan in 2009. For over 30 years, Feng’s been dedicated to the overseas promotion and popularization of Ruan and traditional Chinese music and culture. In October 2010, Martin Feng and his father were invited to perform at concerts in Shanghai, Guangdong and Taiwan, where the 48 Ruans made by Feng himself had also appeared on the stage. In 2012, Feng and his Folk-Jazz Band were invited by the Shanghai International Festival of Arts during which he used his Ruan to play the sounds of Guqin, Pipa, as well as the sounds of guitar and bass. In 2013 he participated in the performance of stage production Impression: Chinese Music. In 2014, Feng won the champion of Brilliant Chinese with a rock song “Girl in Greenhouse”.

He has captivated audiences in China with his virtuosity, eclectic repertoire, and relentless quest to redefine the boundaries of Chinese and Western musical instruments. In his hands, the traditional Chinese instrument comes alive with blues, jazz and even rock guitar styles. Starting in 2018, Feng’s arts projects ‘The sound lost in Times’ and ‘Black Light’, which fused music and poem recitals, exhibitions, musical instruments have spread into communities and schools all over China, by sharing his stories and knowledge to invite more people to walk into the innovation of traditional Chinese music, the core of traditional culture and the integration of Chinese and other cultures.
