Perhaps no other orchestra today can rival the Mariinsky Orchestra, led by Valery Gergiev, in their interpretation of the great Russian masters.

This Thursday evening, the Mariinsky Orchestra will delight local fans with Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 5 in E Minor, Op. 64” and Shostakovich’s “Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, Op. 54.”

The concert will begin with Claude Debussy’s “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun,” a symphonic poem celebrated as the first distinctive piece of impressionism. Inspired by Stéphane Mallarmé’s poem “Afternoon of a Faun,” which portrays a demi-god awakening to revel in sensuous memories of forest nymphs, the piece exudes a spirited, dreamy, and poetic essence and includes a flute theme that evokes images of the nymphs.

Composed during the pinnacle of his career, Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony is profoundly personal and infused with a poignant sense of yearning. Thematic elements interweave throughout the movements, possibly reflecting the composer’s introspections on his own destiny. Music historians suggest Tchaikovsky’s fascination with Beethoven’s 5th Symphony possibly led to the creation of this piece, with fate as a central theme.

As a successor to Tchaikovsky and renowned for his 15 symphonies, extensive chamber works, and concertos, Shostakovich is celebrated for the structural complexity, modern aesthetics, and profound introspection evident in his compositions. His 6th Symphony, a three-movement composition characterized by a lengthy slow movement preceding two scherzos, transforms from profound solemnity to sheer jubilance.

The Mariinsky Orchestra, founded in 1783 and formerly known as the Kirov Orchestra, stands as one of Russia’s oldest musical institutions. Gergiev assumed the role of Mariinsky’s chief conductor and artistic director in 1988 and became its overall director in 1996. In 1998, he led the Mariinsky Orchestra to China for the first time, delivering two performances in Beijing.
