This weekend, pianist Zhang Haochen and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HPO), led by conductor Huang Yi, will perform all five of Rachmaninoff’s dazzlingly difficult piano concertos in two consecutive concerts within 24 hours.

A highlight of the Shenzhen Concert Hall’s current music season, the Rachmaninoff marathon will be a bold challenge. Zhang will be following in the footsteps of Wang Yujia, who accomplished this extraordinary feat in 2023 with the Philadelphia Orchestra and conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin at Carnegie Hall.

Saturday evening’s show is already sold out, and only limited tickets remain for Sunday afternoon.

Huang Yi will conduct HPO and Zhang Haochen in two concerts over the weekend.

The first concert will feature Rachmaninoff’s “Piano Concerto No. 1 in F-sharp Minor, Op. 1,” “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43,” and “Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 18,” while the second will present the composer’s “Vocalise, Op. 34, No. 14,” “Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Minor, Op. 40,” and “Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor, Op. 30.”

In 2009, then 19-year-old Zhang made history as the first Asian to win the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, earning acclaim for his extraordinary skills and profound musical insight beyond his years.

This victory launched his global career. From the Berlin Philharmonie to New York’s Carnegie Hall, from London’s Royal Albert Hall to Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, his performances have graced prestigious venues worldwide.

Zhang has collaborated with renowned orchestras such as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic, winning the hearts of audiences and critics alike.

Beyond performance, Zhang continually pushes his artistic boundaries. In 2022, he published his collection of musical essays, “Beyond Performance.” In 2023, his album “Liszt: 12 Transcendental Études” was selected as Gramophone’s “Recording of the Month.” That same year, he graced the cover of International Piano, solidifying his status as a virtuoso pianist.

Conductor Huang Yi is equally brilliant.

The young maestro once served as assistant conductor to the legendary Seiji Ozawa. As music director of the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Huang is known for his dynamic and passionate conducting style, combined with precise emotional control and a profound understanding of the music.

The HPO is often hailed as “Asia’s finest.”

The HPO is often hailed as “Asia’s finest.” Under the baton of celebrated conductors like Jaap van Zweden, Yu Long, and Lio Kuokman, the orchestra has developed steadily, winning Gramophone’s “Orchestra of the Year Award” in 2019.

Rachmaninoff’s piano works have long been favorites of fans, virtuoso pianists, and orchestras for their technical brilliance, emotional depth, and unforgettable melodies. These six pieces span the composer’s lifetime, reflecting the evolution of his musical style.

With two days of extraordinary performances by world-class artists, this promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for music lovers.
