Free weekend concerts

The Shenzhen Concert Hall has curated three free concerts in its “Afternoon Music Time” series, scheduled for this Saturday and two other Saturdays in January.

The concert on Dec. 27 features flutist Yuan Long, Europe-trained pianist Wen Ming, and outstanding flute students from the School of Music at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. Through solo, double flute, and quartet performances, they will present classics such as Mendelssohn’s scherzo from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Mozart’s flute quartet “Variations on ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,’” and Smetana’s “Vltava.”

On Jan. 10, Europe-trained young organist Li Neng, young pianist Shi Lijia, and their talented students will present a unique double keyboard and piano concert. The program includes pieces such as the beloved theme from the hit game “Black Myth: Wukong,” suites from “Harry Potter” and “Spirited Away,” “Cinema Paradiso,” Chopin’s “Nocturne No. 13 in C Minor,” and Saint-Saëns’ fan-favorite “The Carnival of the Animals.” The concert promises a magical journey through classical masterpieces and enchanting film music.

On Jan. 17, piano professor Wang Changkui, music composition professor Kang He, and associate professor Cai Jianchun from the School of Music and Dance at Shenzhen University will join forces with tenor Jiang Bo, coloratura soprano Yang Mengchun, and violinist Hu Dan to perform Chinese pieces. The program includes “My Motherland,” “A Pastoral Song,” “Spring in Xinjiang,” “Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake,” and “Fishermen’s Song at Eventide.” From majestic vocal pieces to melodious string works, the concert will showcase the rich heritage of Chinese music.
