Diyang Mei
As a violist resident in Germany, Diyang Mei holds the position of principal viola of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and the judge of the Brahms International Viola Competition in Austria. Ever since Diyang Mei’s brilliant success at the 2018 ARD International Music Competition, winning First Place in the viola category, the Audience Prize and several special prizes, he has been steadily furthering his international career. He is also the recipient of the Borleti-Buitoni Awards and the Osnabrücker Musikpreis.

Diyang Mei, born in Hunan in 1994, studied violin at the age of 5 and then started to learn viola at the age of 10. He successively studied with Huiping Liu, Professer Shaowu Wang (Central Conservatory of Music), Professor Hariolf Schlichtig (University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich) and violist Nobuko Imai. Since the fall of 2019, Diyang Mei has held the position of principal viola of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. The same year, he entered the Kronberg Academy, receiving the guidance from Barenboim, Sir Simon Rattle, Eschenbach and many other maestros. He plays a Giovanni Pistucci 1890 provide by the Florian Leonhard Fine Violins in England and an Anasaldo Poggi 1963 supported by the Yu Art Foundation in China.

Diyang Mei was awarded first prizes at 67th ARD International Music Competition Viola Competition, the 52nd International Instrumental Competition for Viola in Markneukirchen, the International Max Rostal Music Competition for Viola in Berlin, the 40th International Viola Society Young Artists Competition in the U.S., the 19th International Johannes Brahms Viola Competition in Austria, etc. As a soloist, Diyang Mei has performed with renowned orchestras such as the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the SWR Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, China National Symphony Orchestra, among others. In addition, he has been invited to the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, the Mozartfest in Würzburg, the Schwarzwald Music Festival, and other music festivals.

“Mei produced a reading of Bartok’s Viola Concerto at the 2018 ARD Competition that was clear-sighted, outgoing and thoroughly enjoyable. As he had shown in the commissioned piece, he is an imaginative interpreter. In his hands the opening theme wandered like a lost soul, full of desolate, keen-edged beauty; elsewhere he delved into the darker, aggressively rhythmic passages with thrilling tenacity. The central Adagio religioso was as sweetly yearning as one could desire and, by the end of the piece, the listener had the impression of a player who might just have that intangible quality of an influential voice, perhaps even a new advocate for the viola”, praised by world well known classical magazine The Strad.
