Program:
Ye Xiaogang: Symphony No.5 “Lu Xun”
(Approximately 70 minutes with no intermission. Program is subject to change)

“Without Confucius, the world would be plunged into endless night. A century ago, the dawn of the Republic of China brought a cacophony of voices and a flourishing nation, where every individual bore a duty. Zhang Taiyan opposed Yuan Shikai; Liang Qichao clamored for constitutional monarchy; Sun Yat-sen championed the Three Principles of the People; Chen Duxiu founded the Communist Party; Cai Yuanpei advocated for academic freedom; Hu Shi promoted democratic ideals; Liang Shuming endorsed rural reconstruction; Xiao Youmei established music education; Lu Xun wielded literature as a tool for social critique; Chen Yinke asserted ‘the spirit of independence and freedom of thought.’ The extraordinary talents and leaders of that era wrote a stirring cultural history in the first half of the century. I often find myself envisioning these intellectual forebears; their ideas still bloom vibrantly, their towering presence a fixture in the firmament of Chinese culture. Without their contributions, the discussions of millennia might have been in vain, and the perplexities of the past century irremediable.”
