Jean-Jacques Justafré’s Orchestra
In the 1980s, the first three light music orchestras swept across China through the cassette tapes, Paul Mauriat Light Music Orchestra in France, Mantovani Light Music Orchestra in the United States and James Last Light Music Orchestra in Germany. They are widely loved by Chinese audience for the happy and beautiful melody. Among them, the theme songs “Love is Blue”, “Toccata”, “The Pearl of Aegean Sea” of Paul Murray Light Music Orchestra, “Moon River”, “Waterfall”, “Green Sleeves” of Mantovani Light Music Orchestra and the songs with superstrong stage expression of James Last Light Music Orchestra have influenced generations of people.
In recent years, the three maestros passed away one after another, thus the three famous orchestras changed accordingly. Paul Mauriat, one of the most famous music composers of the 20th century had collaborated with Jean-Jacques Justafréfor a long time during the recordings, the stages and the tours in France and worldwide. In 2005, Mr Mauriat entrusted Mr Justafréwith the musical director of his orchestra. Paul Mauriat was a great artist who left a considerable repertoire. After his death in 2006, his wife Mrs Irène Mauriat allowed J.-J. Justafréto pursue and to immortalize the work and the repertoire of Paul during concerts. According to Paul’s testament, the orchestra’s name was changed into Jean-Jacques Justafré’s Orchestra with all the musicians remained. The average age of the orchestra is about 50 years old now, and the concertmaster Garabed still act as the first violinist.
Consequently Jean-Jacques Justafréappears as his sole heir. Indeed he remains totally immersed with the spirit of the great Paul Mauriat and keeps on transmitting the work of such a great composer with vivid enthusiasm and talent. To pay homage to him, the orchestra, directed by Justafré, will bring together during its shows all the musicians who worked with him on his records and on his tours.
