Fei Xiang, also known as Kris Phillips, is a Chinese-American pop idol and musical singer. Born in Taiwan to an American father and a Chinese mother, Fei Xiang spent his childhood in Taipei. He entered the entertainment industry as an actor, making three movies in Taiwan in the early 1980s.
With the advance of Chinese pop music, Fei Xiang became a household name overnight in mainland China almost instantaneously after his performance at the 1987 China CCTV Spring Festival Gala. From 1981 to 1989, Fei Xiang released more than 10 albums in Asia. In 1989, he toured in China and all of his 60 concerts were sold out.
In 1991, Fei Xiang extended the range of his performances to Broadway in the US, taking a role in the musical Miss Saigon. Under his English name Kris Phillips, he performed as a soloist in The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. In the concert, Fei performed with Elaine Paige, performing highlights from The Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Sunset Boulevard.
